PIE's mission began in 2022 with an art auction organized by the children of Berhan School in Halifax to provide urgent aid to war-affected and displaced families in Afar. Recognizing the need for lasting change, the Berhan school community decided to channel the funds into a sustainable initiative and identified better education as a crucial ingredient to break the cycle of poverty in Afar.

To achieve this, we collaborated with the Ministry of Education in Addis Ababa, seeking a school that shared our vision and objectives and had strong community engagement. The Ministry connected us with the Arado School in Afar's Asiata region, marking the beginning of a powerful and fast-expanding partnership with strong local ownership. 

PIE was officially incorporated as a Canadian federal not-for-profit organization in January 2023 and, as of late 2025, we are working with our local partners to run programs in four schools (3 primary schools, 1 high school) in the Asiata region of Afar.

Our core objectives are to:

• Empower girls through education.

• Introduce technology to enhance learning.

• Provide affordable electricity to power educational systems.

• Digitize school administration and office operations.
