ABOUT US

Welcome to PIE: Project Initiative Ethiopia, where our mission is by the spirit of community and generosity. With the belief that "PIE Ethiopia is for sharing," we unite to a significant impact on education in underfunded schools located in the rural Afar region of Ethiopia. PIE is a Canadian charity dedicated to empowering students in rural Ethiopia by supplying teaching aids, facilitating technology transfer, and providing financial support to underfunded elementary schools in remote areas.

Ways We Support Children

The Focus of Our Efforts

Empowering Girls

The gender clubs in all three schools aim to raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by girls in rural settings like Afar. In these areas, girls often stay home, marry at a young age, and are vulnerable to various health complications as a consequence.

Closing the Digital Gap

The global digital divide is widening, especially in countries like Ethiopia where computer access remains a luxury. This issue is even more pronounced in remote villages like Afar. Without access to computers and the internet, students are cut off from the information age, hindering development. PIE believes that providing elementary schools with computer access is crucial to enhance the quality of education, bridge the digital gap, and combat poverty at its roots.

Education

The standard of education in rural Ethiopia is below the national average. A scarcity of teachers, inadequate facilities, a lack of books and technology contribute to high failure rates in national exams at grades 6 and 8, leading many students to drop out. In a recent exam, 68% of students failed. To address this, we strive to narrow the gap by training teachers through video sessions, supplying schools with necessary materials, constructing libraries, offering after-school tutorials, and successfully integrating computers as teaching aids.

Importance of Electricity

It's been a bit of a struggle lately without electricity for our Gender Club. We can't make those essential feminine hygiene products for girls who really need them. And guess what? Our Computer Program is on hiatus, and the classrooms are basically saunas at a toasty 40' C – no fans to cool things down. Most of our schools in rural areas are off the grid, and even the ones with power are struggling with sky-high electricity bills. But hey, we're cooking up a cool solution – introducing our new project, Solar Power!

Let's light up some lives together!

We embarked on an exhilarating journey to revive a dormant solar power installation! It had fallen silent due to neglect and a shortage of essential parts. Join us in the excitement of rekindling sustainable power!

We started training a group of teachers from Berga, and Arado  school on how to maintain the solar panels & batteries. Eventually, we aim to repair the power station after training is completed.

From Idea to Reality: The Evolution of PIE ETHIOPIA

We started the project by involving the community in needs assessment, project planning and implementation. No one knows better what a community needs than the members of said community. This is how we choose each new project as well.

Importance of Meal Programs

                                   Best Practice

Providing a meal to keep the kids at school in between school and the after school tutorial made a big difference in the progress of their learning.  This avoided hours of walking home and returning to school which usually made them so exhausted that they could no longer focus on learning.
